Haison Cristobal Piggangay
I was born and raised in a land rich with natural wonders, green hills, and verdant mountains - the Cordillera region. Our family came from a line of farmers who left their farms in the province hoping to get higher education. For both my parents, the greatest gift they can give their children is education. With that in mind, my parents spared no resources to get my siblings and me the education we needed. My father was a Policeman, a hardworking man with high ideals and a strong sense of discipline. My mother was a clerk at the city hall. She was loved by her co-workers as she was hardworking and kind. I was raised by a disciplinarian father and a loving mother. Naturally, I grew closer to my mother.
Sending all eight of their children to school proved difficult for my parents, which is why we siblings aimed to get scholarships. Two of my older brothers passed the admission process to NYK-TDG Maritime Academy, and soon I became a Cadet of the Philippine National Police Academy. My youngest brother is also a DOST scholar at the Philippine Science Highschool. Through our perseverance and determination, we aim to give our family a better life.
The life of a Cadet is very challenging. When I took the oath, I knew my life would never be the same again. I was shocked by the new way of life I was exposed to. The transition from living the civilian life to the regimented way of life is indeed difficult especially during the Breaking Period. I endured the first 45 days with the thought of seeing my family again during the Incorporation Rites. I was excited to show them how the boy they sent to the Academy would become a man.
However, life is full of twists, turns, and unexpected events. My mother passed away onboard the bus while on the way to visit me during the Incorporation Rites. A supposedly happy day for my family and I became one of the most regrettable. Even then, I must pursue my chosen path to become an officer. My heaviest regret now is that I will never have the chance to show my mother my achievements.
Now, as a graduating Cadet of the Philippine National Police Academy, I am sure that I have made my parents proud. Despite all the challenges and trials, I have reached this point. Soon, I will finish the last “tion” of my Cadetship Training which is graduation. Yet, graduation is not an end but the beginning of a much greater cause - public service.
